 | What is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)? |
| | | | | | | | Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the commonest hormonal disturbance to affect women and is linked with hormonal imbalances and insulin resistance. Approximately 1 in 5 women have polycystic ovaries and up to 75% of these women experience symptoms at some times in their lives. | | | The Symptoms There are a whole range of symptoms, which can include (figures in brackets represent the number of women with this problem):
- unwanted/excess bodily hair (64%)
- irregular/absent periods (52%)
- problems being overweight (35%)
- acne (27%)
- hair loss/male pattern baldness
- fatigue
- depression
|
| The Cause The cause of PCOS is believed to involve an inability of the ovaries to produce hormones in the correct proportions. The pituitary gland senses this and releases abnormal amounts of lutenizing hormones (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) which are both linked to the ovaries ability to develop and release and egg. It is this which leads to infertility, menstrual and menopausal problems in women with PCOS. |
| Longer Term In addition, if you have PCOS, you are potentially at a higher risk of developing the following long-term health problems:
- Miscarriage
- Eating Disorders
- Cholesterol Problems
- High Blood Pressure
- Non-insulin dependant diabetes
- Gestational diabetes
- Cardiovascular disease
- Endometrial cancer
- Endometriosis
- Ovarian cysts
